the most extraordinary pub you are ever likely to come across
Welcome to The Locks
Welcome to a pub like no other, where locals congregate, pagans celebrate, and visitors are given the warmest of welcomes in the most wonderful of settings. With Constable views from Norfolk into Suffolk over the Waveney marshes, you are unlikely to find another pub so steeped in memories and ancient tales.
The Locks is built around the centuries-old lock keeper’s cottage, once guardian of the lock where Wherry’s sailed upstream laden with grain, and returned heavy with beer barrels stopping for a pint on their way.
Come by boat, foot, bike or car and enjoy Grain beers alongside a selection of excellent food. We welcome friendly dogs on leads.
There is a wheelchair ramp into the pub and we will always do our very best to make suitable arrangements, but please be aware that due to the age of the building, there are tricky areas to navigate.

The Main Bar
The main bar is the old lock keeper’s cottage, and you can feel the history surround you. Still without electricity, and lit by candlelight after dusk, this is the place to get cosy in front of the roaring woodburner in the winter, or enjoy views across the garden and marshes over a game of cards, a good conversation, and a beer.
Serving Grain beers on cask and keg, as well as ciders, wines, spirits, and soft drinks.
The garden is the place to sit and eat on those lazy summer days. The Susan Ellis woods alongside the garden are the perfect place for children to play hide and seek and explore, or you can follow the path over the footbridge and into Suffolk.
You will often find live music outside at the weekend in the summer, so bring a blanket to enjoy the festival feel of the place. If you are the adventurous type, you can pull up your paddle board or canoe for a welcome rest, but please, keep tops on, even on those hot days so you don’t scare the swans away.
The Dining Room
With the recent addition of a wood burner, the dining room is the perfect place to enjoy a meal.
Although you’ll want to be out in the garden to eat during the sunshine, we have plenty of room for colder and wetter days, or an evening meal when the sun has set.
Join us for lunchtime dining, evening meals, or an amazing Sunday Roast.
You can find out our kitchen hours here, and read about our delicious food here.
Our lounge is the place to relax on a leather sofa with a drink or eat your meal if you want a cosier setting. The perfect spot to watch the activities in the garden or take in the stunning views across the Waveney marshes and into Suffolk.
This room is available for free private hire, so get in touch if you would like to host an event here.
